I'm going to attempt
to not have an epidural this time around. Fact is we have really crappy maternity insurance and we'd end up paying for it out of pocket. At the end of the day I think they are worth every penny, but it would also be nice not to have to give up all my pennies. So, I need your help. Do you have any books/webpages with good information on how to do this insane feat? I'm hoping if I tell enough people and talk myself into it long enough I'll be too proud to end up getting one. I made it to a 7 before geting one with Trace so I think I can hold off for just another hour, who knows though. Anyway, any helpful information would be wonderful! Tx

I've heard hypnobirthing is awesome. I didn't use any special methods though, just my yoga breathing. Good luck!
WOW!!! You are awesome. I don't have any info for you, because I am all for the drugs. But i think women that do it natural are so cool. SO i will be cheering for you to make it:)
I have also heard hypno-birthing is awesome.
I started with the Bradley Method and this book really helped. http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Childbirth-Bradley-Way-Revised/dp/0452276594/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236212127&sr=8-1
I would start by practicing some meditation and relaxation. If you made it to a 7 you can go all the way. Just keep telling yourself drugs are not an option and prepare for doing it without. You are a strong amazing woman. You can do it if you really want to do it. The only thing that separates the woman who does drug free and the woman who does it with drugs is desire and attitude. Sometimes it's unwilling like Jen Morrison, but usually it's those two things. There's no magic bullet. Good luck.
WOW! Good for you. I wish I had "new" advice from the help already left but I too have heard hypnobirthing really works. I've had two friends who have done it with an epidural and the next time with just hypnobirthing and they said it was basically the same. You'll do great. I hear the nice thing about no epidural too is the recovery is wonderful.
Jamie, I didn't have an epidural or any drugs, for that matter, with my first 3 kids(but I sure as heck did with Paige - she was stubborn). I would just say, wait until the last minute to go to the hospital - the earlier you go, the more crap they subject you to. But, in the end, don't try to be superwoman...do what feels right for you. Good luck!
Well- I'm all for the drugs but have had 2 kids without (not because I didn't beg and plea for them, it just didn't happen)- but I have to say the recovery time was SO wonderful without the drugs. SO much better. I didn't feel dizzy and just plain nasty like I did with the drugs. So just think of the after effects. Pain now for pleasure later! Good luck! You are a tough woman, you can do anything you set your mind to!
Money is ONE thing, pain is ANOTHER! But I did my first without drugs... I changed my mind for the second. Both were amazing. Looking back 30 years it doesn't seem it was so hard - just tons of 'pressure'. But you know how the memory fades. Good luck girl! You can do it!
hey there!! good for you. I really don't have any advise. I just want to offer words of encourgement. I know you can do it. I was lucky to have incredibly fast deliveries ( do to pit drip )and able to have all 4 kids w/out, however, i really am fond of the one that they can pump into your IV. I used that as my last resort drug. I think the important thing is to be okay with it if you need to use an epidural. good luck! we are excited for you and Cris!
I don't know if this will help, but my epidural with Weston cost $1800 and I only needed it for 1 hour. I'd do anything for one hour for 1800 bucks.
Hey, I'm behind on your blog, sorry! :)
I read a really good book called Ralaxation for Labor and for Life, or something like that. I'll look it up and get back to you. But I agree with staying home as long as you possibly can and just do what seems to help. Deep breathing and walking around helped me the most. Staying still was torture. And if you have the option, the jacuzzi tubs at the hospitals are AWESOME!!! It helped me through transition the first time I went 'au natural.' And as Jennifer said, just remember that your body knows how to do this. Women have done this for all of time - you don't have to know any special techniques, really, you just have to let your body do it's work and remember that the pain is normal and okay and you will get through it. Knowing as much as you can about what your body is accomplishing with each contraction and visualizing all that 'stretching and opening' that's taking place helped me concentrate on knowing that my body was doing what it needs to do and not so much on how much it hurt.
I think our perception that pain means something is wrong gets in the way in labor and birth sometimes. You have to shift your thinking and remember that contractions means things are happening! Woo-hoo!!!
Good luck. I had my first with epidural and the rest without and my experiences without were much much better, despite it all. It's so incredible what our bodies are capable of. :)
