A Real Pirate!!

Today, it happened. The dreaded moment of 'in the mouths of babes' happened to me. We were in Ross returning some capris (ugh why can't I find cute capris) and the boys were in the cart playing with their little race cars. They were being pretty loud, but were staying in the cart so I just let them be. I turned to sign the slip and it went really quiet. For mothers of young kids you know that's never a good sign. I flipped around to see both my boys eyes and mouths wide open. They were just standing their in amazement, almost in shock. I said 'What's the matter guys?'
Well, in the line next to us there was an older gentleman, with a big dark beard, dark coat and you guessed it, an eye patch. So Kayden almost screams 'Mom, a real life pirate! I can't beleive it!' Trace says 'Oh my dosh, a pirate, look everyone!' I wanted to die.
A few women in line started giggling as I was trying to cover their mouths and get the heck out of there. I felt terrible, I even had big tears in my eyes, I just didn't know what to do. I looked up to apologize to the man and he made my day. He gave up his place in line, calmly walked over to my boys - who went back into shock mode at this point- and said 'Hi young men, would you like to shake hands with a real life pirate?' Of course they said yes, never taking their eyes off of his eye patch. He shook hands with them and talked to them for a minute or two, it was really cute. He was so wonderful and could tell I was mortified. He tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Don't you worry, I enjoyed this little exchange very much.' I don't know why I was so emotional about it, I just felt terrible.
I said thank you and tried to hurry to the back of the store, all the while my boys are yelling 'Oh my word, I shook hands with a real life pirate! Can you believe it mom! This is the best day ever!' Then they started chanting 'A Pirate! A Pirate! A Pirate!'
Anyway, I'm laughing about it now, and am very grateful for that sweet man making my boys day.

That's hilarious. And embarassing, I know. :)

What a great sport for that man to be so smooth and make a memory for your kids...great story! We all have those moments when our kids are painfully (and loudly) honest - like, "Mom, why is that lady so fat?" or just the other day, "Mom, why does he have red spots all over his face?" (about a teenager with acne)...lovely!

That is so great. I'm sure the man has heard it before and I'm sure it won't be the last time either. That's cool that he was so wonderful about it. If I had an eye patch I would totally play it up. I would even do an "ARRR" for the kids and tell them about my pet parrot.
